Fine Art Friday

August 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

For this edition of Fine Art Friday I would like to share my favorite Classical Music piece.

Brahms Symphony Number 3, Movement Number 3, Poco Allegretto

This piece is so moving.  You can hear Brahms’ longing for Clara Schumann.  It is just such a beautiful, bittersweet piece and I love every moment of it.

New York Trip

August 29, 2008 · 4 Comments

I had a wonderful time hanging out with family in New York and here are some pictures from the trip…

We saw this guy who looked just like Dog the Bounty Hunter in one of the many airports we got to see

I found this memory tree that made me laugh.

My mom and my Uncle Mark

My Aunt Nancy, my Uncle Mike, and my mother.

My cousin Libby making the first shot we shared together. SoCo and lime! (She’s my roomie on the cruise we are taking to the Bahamas in October.)

Dancing at the party

My mom with the lead singer of the band.

Aunt Marcy and my mother trying to get Uncle Mark to dance with them.

My Uncle Mark and my cousin Earon getting the bonfire going

It was a great bonfire. It was so good that it made me miss Texas!

My Olympic watching buddy, Mulligan.

Isn’t he handsome?

And as a preview…this first picture of my new apartment…

Some song lyrics that kind of explain where my life is at right now…

Some Days Are Better Than Others

Lyrics by Bono

Some days are dry, some days are leaky
Some days come clean, other days are sneaky
Some days take less, but most days take more
Some slip through your fingers and onto the floor

Some days you’re quick, but most days you’re speedy
Some days you use more force than is necessary
Some days just drop in on us
Some days are better than others

Some days it all adds up
And what you got is not enough
Some days are better than others

Some days are slippy, other days sloppy
Some days you can’t stand the sight of a puppy
Your skin is white but you think you’re a brother
Some days are better than others

Some days you wake up with her complaining
Some sunny days you wish it was raining
Some days are sulky, some days have a grin
And some days have bouncers and won’t let you in

Some days you hear a voice
Taking you to another place
Some days are better than others

Some days are honest, some days are not
Some days you’re thankful for what you’ve got
Some days you wake up in the army
And some days it’s the enemy

Some days are work, most days you’re lazy
Some days you feel like a bit of a baby
Lookin’ for Jesus and His mother
Some days are better than others

Some days you feel ahead
You’re making sense of what she said
Some days are better than others

Some days you hear a voice
Taking you to another place
Some days are better than others

To all you girls who wear tube tops and a bra with clear straps: Just because they are clear doesn’t mean we can’t see them.  We can.  Buy a strapless bra.

Economically Stimulated by Edouard

It is funny when Hurricanes come.  (Ok, well not that Hurricanes are funny but…well…just keep reading.)

People on the coast tend to flip out when Hurricanes are heading towards them.  I find this amusing.  Granted, I understand flipping out if you actually live on the coast.  Technically Houston is on the coast.  I’m a resident of Houston and I live 70 miles from the coast.  The most we will get is rain and some wind.  Yet there is still an evacuation plan for our part of town, there are monster lines at the gas station, and every store is sold out of bread, water and batteries.  And all for what…a little bit of rain?

Maybe I need to be taking this more seriously but I just can’t help but think about something my family has been discussing.  Hurricanes are good.  From my father’s perspective they protect his job as an on-shore exploration geologist.  My aunt, the world’s best nurse, gets pain overtime and is very busy during a storm.  My cousin (he works for the cable company) gets pain mega overtime for working on lines that are down.  A little bit of flooding allows insurance companies to raise the rates on flood protection just as people want to go but it.  In reality, a small Hurricane actually stimulates the economy.  And aren’t we all about a little economic stimulation?

As I prepare for the first hurricane party of the season I’m also left to reflect upon how powerful and mighty our God is.  Storms can be so big and scary.  They are truly powerful.  This leads me to thinking about how powerful our awesome and might God is!  I also am reminded that I’m completely His.  I gave my life to Him and I know he will protect me until I am meant to be in heaven.  Nothing gives me more comfort than knowing that the length of my life has already been decided.  As my grandfather always said, “I’m going to live until I die.”

Tropical Storm Eddie, we are ready!  Bring us your mighty winds and rain (that we need right now!) and we will show you just how much your little storm doesn’t bother us at all.  How do we plan on doing that?  Probably with poker, beer, and copious amounts of food!  I love my family.
